The new 2,500 square foot Branch Library replaces the existing Hackberry facility damaged in 2020 by Hurricane Laura. Expanding on the previous functions of the Library, the building includes a larger 1,000+ square foot library stack area, a multipurpose room and support spaces for various types of community gatherings.
The building’s design reflects residential detailing inspired by South Louisiana traditions, such as the “haint blue” porch ceiling color. Designed to meet stringent flood requirements and hurricane-resistant loads, the raised timber structure is topped with exterior walls cladded with low-maintenance lapped-siding and energy-efficient thermal components, capped by a high-performance standing seam metal roof. The building envelope and humidity-control HVAC system protects the library’s contents and books from the harsh exterior conditions of Southwest Louisiana.
